Telluride, Colorado is the choice location for a vacation home if you are looking for a place where remaining active is simply a part of the lifestyle. For summer-goers, the rather newly developed town has countless trails running up and around the mountains for biking and hiking, a river running through the center for fishing and rafting, and mines for a day of exploring. For obvious reasons, Telluride is strictly snow sports through the winter with plenty of green, blue, and black ski runs. There is no lack of luxury, either- the town is filled with high-end restaurants and spas for your down time. For anyone still not sold: Ralph Lauren’s 17,000 acre ranch is just outside the town.
Almost all Colorado golf courses have incredible views, but few can hold a candle to this layout in Telluride’s Mountain Village. The surrounding peaks of the San Juan Mountains and 9,500-foot elevation will literally take your breath away. You’ll pay a bit of a premium since this course is the only one for miles around, but your drives, aided by the thin air, will travel farther than they ever have before. That’s got to be worth something. 18-hole rates: $75-$190.
“Unbelievable beauty” abounds regardless of the season in this “laid-back” community. Not only do “majestic peaks wrap around you,” but the downtown area boasts National Historic Landmark status, so “you are truly in an original Victorian town that has kept the charm of a bygone era.” During ski season, you’ll find “zero lift lines and smaller crowds,” and in warmer weather, outdoor enthusiasts can “hike Black Bear and rent a jeep for Imogene Pass.” But the most winning aspect, according to most readers, is its “down-to-earth” denizens. As one reader says, “the nearest stoplight is 75 miles away, as is the nearest snob.
