The legendary Taj Mahal played a free concert in Mountain Village last Friday to huge and enthusiastic crowd.  The show was sponsored by the Telluride Festival of the Arts, celebrating all mediums of art, including food and wine.  Most years the highlight of the festival is the Grand Tasting on Saturday night.  Artists from all over the country and points beyond display their work throughout the core area of the Mountain Village.  Situated amongst the artists are countless stations serving up an eclectic array of foods and wines and spirits.  It really is a great night of old friends and new friends enjoying fine cuisine.  I said that was normally the highlight because this year Taj stole the whole weekend.  The crowd gathered hours before show time to secure the most coveted spots in the grassy amphitheater.  Taj came on while the sun was still up and got everyone in the crowd dancing.  He played through a spectacular sunset that was accompanied by a brief and benign hail shower.  His band was seasoned and tight.  It was a very special night.  Taj has a world-wide following, but I’m not sure if there is a greater concentration of his band base than in Telluride.  Taj and Telluride go way back, and it was evident by the crowd being filled with some of Telluride’s oldest locals.  If you ever get the chance to see Taj Mahal live I highly recommend it.
